And… We’re Back!

A First Look at What it’s Like to Move Into the Middle Years Program

School is back in session, and that means big changes for some of us!

It’s only been a few weeks since school’s been back in session, and there are already so many things happening. I spent all of Lower School excited about Middle School, and one of the best parts of Upper School is the freedom to decide what you want to eat at lunchtime. This excitement is shared by many, with one sixth grade student saying; “one of my favorite things about sixth grade is that we have more freedom in break time, and we have grade level days.”

New freedoms given to sixth graders during break include going to the gym, (for middle schoolers on A and C days, and for high schoolers on B and D days), going to the library, choosing what you like to eat for lunch, and even eating outside if you like! But, what are Grade Level Days? Grade Level Days are days where students leave campus to go somewhere with their whole grade. Students get the opportunity to get to know each other outside of the school environment, and are able to visit exciting places, such as in sixth grade, you get to go to the Efteling!

Regardless of the many excitements which come with entering middle school, many sixth graders are worried about what’s to come. For instance, the increased quantity of testing. All students in the MYP (grades 6-10) are required to take the mental aptitude profile (MAP ) test. This allows teachers to see what level students are at, and who might require extra support. But, not to worry, these tests are not graded and do not impact report cards.

But, what else is there? Middle school students can join clubs, with way more happening than you can imagine! Every day during lunch, different clubs meet. You could join The Voice, the Yearbook Club or even a knitting club! Additionally, there are tons of awesome activities available after school, like Choir or Instrumental Ensemble, and the bonus is you don’t have to have to read music to do either.

Why am I telling you all this? Because now that we’re back there’s so much to do, so many things to join, and so many ways to get involved with school. If you are passionate about something, stick with it, and you’ll find your way in Upper School!
